January: The Fresh Start?

In theory, January should be a fresh start, the perfect time to hit the reset button. However, for many of us living in the hustle and bustle of modern life, that perfect reset doesn’t always happen.

This has definitely been the case for me this year. I’ve thrown myself into the deep end in every regard and because of that, I’ve started to feel the familiar rise of anxiety creeping in.

For me, anxiety manifests as head pressure, forgetfulness, ruminating thoughts, compulsions to double-check everything I do and jumping from one task to the next, without completing anything.

So, I thought this would be the perfect time to share what I do when I feel this way because let’s be honest, me running around frazzled and you running around frazzled, isn’t helping anyone.

In fact, as science continues to show, chronic stress can have serious impacts on our physical health, leading to illness and disease. The importance of the mind-body connection cannot be overstated.

Please note that everyone is different. We are all unique in our own beautiful way. I’m sharing tips that work for me. Take what feels right to you and leave what doesn’t. <3

Consistent Meal Times

When I’m stressed, the first thing to go is my appetite. But skipping meals is an absolute no-go for me because I know that nutrition is a non-negotiable foundation for how I feel throughout the day.

I’ve also found that sticking to exact mealtimes gives my day structure, which helps me feel less chaotic during times of high stress and anxiety.

Sometimes this does mean eating when I don’t necessarily feel hungry, but it ensures that my blood sugar is stabilised, I have consistent energy throughout the day and I’m eating enough food to support essential bodily functions such as hormone and neurotransmitter production, optimising my reproductive health and maintaining a healthy immune system.

Herbal Support

There are so many beautiful herbs that help support and nourish the nervous system during times of stress. I honestly cannot pick favorites, as I adore them all wholeheartedly and they’ve each played a pivotal role in my life at some point.

However, I will give a special mention to the herbie helpers I’ve felt called to include in my mix this month.

Schisandra
Schisandra is a powerful adaptogen that supports stress resilience and energy. It’s revered for its ability to nourish the liver, support detoxification, enhance mental clarity and promote vitality.

Skullcap
Skullcap is a calming herb often used to support the nervous system. It helps reduce stress, ease anxiety and promotes restful sleep. It’s also known for relieving muscle tension and headaches, making it a wonderful choice for relaxation.

Ziziphus
Ziziphus is helpful in supporting emotional balance. Often used in Traditional Chinese Medicine, Ziziphus is thought to nourish the heart and mind, relieving anxiety and encouraging tranquility.

Movement

I’ve found that listening to my body to determine when it needs rest versus movement is key.

For me, the first few days of my period are a no-go for anything beyond a walk. However, the week before my period, my mind can sometimes trick me into thinking that 30 minutes of yoga is too much. Yet, when I push through and give that time to myself, I feel rejuvenated and grounded in my body again.

It has taken me years to learn how and when it’s best for me to move my body. So experiment with friends, try a new YouTube video or finally book in at that Pilates studio you’ve been meaning to try.

Sunshine

Time outside is essential for my mental well-being and I genuinely believe it’s vital for every human being.

Any excuse to get out into the sun! I walk in the sun, journal in the sun and eat in the sun.

Living in Australia, we’re blessed with so much sunshine but please be mindful of sun protection and watch out for when the UV levels get a little too spicy.

So this has been my little pocket guide for the past week and it’s one I find myself revisiting whenever life feels overwhelming. These simple yet powerful practices remind me that even during the busiest, most chaotic times, I have the tools to care for myself.

I hope that some of these ideas resonate with you and inspire you to find your own ways to reset and recharge.
